A Rising Star Joins the EF Education-EasyPost Squad: Unlocking Potential, One Race at a Time
The Canadian Cycling Sensation is Here!
In a thrilling development, EF Education-EasyPost proudly introduces Michael Leonard, a 21-year-old phenom from Oakville, Ontario, Canada. With a burning desire to conquer the toughest one-day classics and earn his grand tour debut, Michael brings an attacking spirit and a wealth of experience to the team.
But here's where it gets interesting: Michael's journey to the WorldTour has been anything but ordinary.
A Rapid Rise to the Top
Michael's cycling career began with kids' triathlons and found its true calling at the Mattamy National Cycling Centre, a velodrome near his hometown built for the 2015 Pan American Games. This venue, he says, "launched" his career, providing a positive and dynamic environment that fostered his growth.
From there, Michael's talent shone through in Canada's junior ranks, leading to international opportunities. He seized the chance to race with the Toronto Hustle development team and then made a bold move to Italy as a second-year junior, fully immersing himself in the rich cycling culture.
"The transition was tough," Michael admits, "but it was an incredible opportunity to learn and grow. Being in Italy, racing every weekend, was a dream come true."
Overcoming Adversity, Rising Stronger
Michael's rise to the WorldTour was not without challenges. Despite breaking his hip at the start of his second season, he turned this setback into an opportunity for growth and reevaluation. By the time he returned to racing, he was even stronger than before, and his performance has been on an upward trajectory ever since.
And this is the part most people miss: Michael's versatility as a rider. He's not just a helper; he's a champion. He's the reigning Canadian time trial champion and has achieved promising results in tough, hilly WorldTour stage races. In 2024, he even won a stage at the Tour de l'Avenir, the under-23 version of the Tour de France.
A Bright Future with EF Pro Cycling
Jonathan Vaughters, founder and CEO of EF Pro Cycling, sees immense potential in Michael. "His win in the opening time trial at the Tour de l'Avenir was a sign of his exceptional ability. Michael has the fundamental motor to do something big for us. He's a time trialist who can climb, a rare combination."
Michael is now focused on maintaining his momentum and maximizing his talent. He wants to be a consistent presence in the biggest races, always fighting for stages and supporting his teammates.
"I want to look back on my career and feel that I achieved everything I could have," he says.
When he's not racing, Michael enjoys playing the piano and reading history books at his European base in Andorra. We can't wait to see the chapters he writes in cycling history with EF Education-EasyPost.
